The slaughterhouse
lyrics & music: Mikis Theodorakis
vocals: Antonis Kaloyiannis
At noon they knock at the office
I count the knocks I measure the pain
I am a calf; they have closed me in the slaughterhouse
today you tomorrow me
They knock in the evening at Andrea’s terrace
I count the knocks I measure the blood
behind the wall we will be together again
tak tak you tak tak I
Which means
in this mute language
I am holding up with strength, I am holding on well
In our hearts the celebration begins
tak tak you tak tak I
tak tak you tak tak I
Our slaughterhouse smelled of thyme
and our cell a red sky
Our slaughterhouse smelled of thyme
and our cell a red sky
They knock in the evening at Andrea’s terrace
I count the knocks I measure the blood
behind the wall we will be together again
tak tak you tak tak I
Which means
in this mute language
I am holding up with strength, I am holding on well
Our slaughterhouse smelled of thyme
and our cell a red sky
Our slaughterhouse smelled of thyme
and our cell a red sky

Part of Theodorakis’ work ‘The songs of Andrea,’ dedicated to the fighter for freedom from dictatorship, Andrea Lentaki. It refers to historic events and especially the torture chambers which are represented by the composer, they had placed him in a cell close to the torture chambers, such as the ones where Andreas Lentakis himself had suffered, in the police precinct building of Bouboulina. It is one of the most important works of the struggle against the Junta of the Generals, and is made up of the series of songs-
1. What you once were you will be again
2. We are two
3. They told you a lot of lies
4. The slaughterhouse
In Paradise
Lyrics: Odysseas Elytis (excerpt from the Monogram)
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
Vocals: Maria Papanikolaou
In Paradise I have marked an island
You, unchanged and a house on the sea
With a big bed and a small door
I have thrown into the bottomless places an echo
That I may look at myself every morning when I awake
That I may half see you passing in the water
and that I may half weep for you in Paradise

The Pleiades who has seven children
passes through the heavens
one day she stops for a little while
at my poor little house and looks at me
-’Greetings,* how are you, are you well?’
-’I am well. And how are the children?’
-’What can I tell you, there, on high
they are devoured by the cold air and isolation’
-’Is that the reason for your bitterness, my lady?
Why don’t you send them down here to me?’
-’Thank you, but they are many;
they will eat you out of house and home’
-’Well then, just give me the littlest one,
shining Magic.’
-’Take her, and remember
that you are the husband of the sky’
She said, and before I could speak
she pins her to my hair
They are shining, the mountains all around
My hands are full of fire
and the Pleiades, who has seven children
departs, and waves goodbye

*”Poulia,” is the nickname for the constellation “the Pleiades,” and is a singular, feminine proper noun.
The word may also refer to a sequins or spangle, a sparkling ornament.
**”Yeia sas”- traditional greeting,
literally, “To your health”)

From Liturgy No. 2,
Oratorio; composed 1982
(also known as
I Set the Door Open in the Evening)
I set the door open in the evening
I hold the lamp up high
so that all those who grieve in the world can see
can come and find company
so they will find the table laid
a jug of water for grief to drink
and among us there will be standing
pain, brother of the world
so they will find a corner to lean into
a stool for the blind man to sit
and there, while we are talking
Christ, too, will come into our company

The church bells will signal
words: Yiannis Ritsos
music: Mikis Theodorakis
vocals: Yiorgos Ntalaras
With so many leaves the sun waves good day
with so many standards shines, shines the sky
and those ones are in irons, and those others are in the earth.
Quiet- anytime now the church bells will signal.
This earth is theirs and ours.
Beneath the earth in their crossed arms
they hold the rope of the church bells,
they are awaiting the hour, waiting to signal the resurrection
this earth is theirs and ours
no one can take it from us
Quiet- anytime now the church bells will signal.

They shot high
lyrics: Yiannis Ritsos
music: Mikis Theodorakis
vocals: Dimitris Basis
I held on to my life
Lyrics: George Seferis
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
Vocals: Antonis Kaloyiannis
The flowering sea and the mountains in the loss of the moon
the big stone near the Arabian fig trees and the asphodels
the pitcher which did not want to run dry at the end of the day
and the closed bed near the cypress trees and your hair
golden; the stars of the Cygnet and that star Aldevaran.
I held on to my life
traveling amongst the yellow trees
in the driving rain
to silent hillsides laden with beech leaves
no fire on their summit; darkness is falling.
I held on to my life; on your left hand a line
a slash in your knee, supposed to exist
in the sand of the last summer supposed
to stay there where the north wind blew as I heard
around the frozen lake the foreign voice.
The faces and people I see do not ask, nor the woman
walking bent over, suckling her child.
I climb the mountains: bruised valleys; the snow-covered
plain, to over there, the snow-covered plain, nothing do they ask.
neither the closed weather in a mute, abandoned country chapel, nor
the hands that spread out, searching, and the roads.
I held my life in a whisper in the endless silence,
I don’t know how to speak anymore, nor to think; whispers
like the breathing of the cypress tree on that night
like the human voice of the night sea on the pebble shore
like the memory of your voice saying “happiness.”
I close my eyes, searching for the secret unified answer of the water
beneath the ice, the smiling of the sea, the closed wells,
fumbling with my veins for the veins that escape me
there where the waterflowers end and that man
who walks blindly on the snows of silence.

Just a little longer
Lyrics: George Seferis
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
First version: Maria Farantouri
Just a little longer we shall see
Just a little longer we shall see
The almond trees blooming
the almond trees blooming
the almond trees blooming
Just a little longer we shall see
Just a little longer we shall see
the marble shining, shining
under the sun,
and the sea in waves
Just a little more, we must raise ourselves
A little higher, a little higher, a little higher
Just a little more, we must raise ourselves
A little higher, a little higher, a little higher

Α version of the famous “On the hidden shore,” with Mikis Theodorakis, on the occasion of a concert in honor of his 85th birthday on Lycabettus, July 31st 2010.
In his words before the song, he thanks the organizers and many younger artists in attendance, for whom he says he has a fatherly feeling, as they have been an important part of his life. He mentions that this is his favorite song, with special meaning; he also mentions that Greeks have to be pushed back as far as they can go, before they will choose to act: and that this is when the moment of truth comes, and either they will become traitors or heroes.
Refusal (The Hidden Shore)
Lyrics: George Seferis
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
On the hidden shore
white as a dove
we were thirsty at midday;
but the water was brackish.
On the golden sand,
we wrote her name;
How lovely the wind blew from the sea
and the writing was wiped out.
With what heart, what spirit,
what desires and passion
we took our life; wrong!
and we changed our lives.
I got lost
lyrics: Yiannis Theodorakis
music: Mikis Theodorakis
vocals: Haris Alexiou, Dimitra Galani & Yiannis Parios
I got lost,
in the streets
which have tied me for ever
with the alleys, with the harbours
I got lost,
as I had no wings and I had you Katiniò
as I had many dreams
And the harbour,
and the harbour is small
as Ive always been alone
and I’ll always be alone.
Night in your eyes
words: Yiannis Theodorakis
music: Mikis Theodorakis
vocals: Manolis Mitsias
Suddenly in the darkness a light was kindled
cherubim, seraphim brought you to Earth
the moon sails in the source of your eyes
Night in your eyes
night in your heart as well
eros slept in your embrace
Vivid green leaves now kiss you
cherubim, seraphim sweetly sing
you are my great pain, my king and my sorrow
