The jasmine flower
lyrics & music: traditional
vocals: Maria Anamaterou

(spoken)

From the east to the west and from the north to the south,
homelands rest in the swing of the aeons. A sun
for all fit into a ray of light
and behind the ironwork gate
nudged the jasmine flower to open.
The beautiful scent permeates the streets,
Let your hair down and breathe…. eros

(sung)

The jasmine flower passed by
and said to the lily “To your health! (Greetings)”
and the lily replied,
“It is heavy, your scent.”

But by Saint Konstantino,
if I lose you, what shall become of me?

Arguments with the jasmine
the lily continued
in the perfume of the jasmine flower
even he withers.

But by Saint Konstantino,
the water you drink, I also drink

The jasmine flowers by your door
permeates the streets with its beautiful scent
and its heavy perfume
makes the passersby dizzy.

Give it, give it, give it, give it,
let it have its mind and way of thinking.

Δώσ’ του, δώσ’ του, δώσ’ του, δώσ’ του

My bird sent to foreign lands

My sweet apple and tangerine
lyrics & music: traditional
(Asia Minor- Smyrna)

In your sweet eyes
in your sweet graces
I forgot, little by little
every other love

My apple and mandarin
Whatever you say shall happen

You imagine that I love you
falsely and you are sad
In the leaves of my heart
I have you, and you are sleeping

Come, come as I tell you

don’t tyrannize me so I cry

And now that I have loved you
I am going completely crazy
and I am losing myself and being extinguished
my love, for you

My apple and mandarin
Whatever you say shall happen

ψεύτικα καi λυπάσαι

Where you love on this earth
lyrics: Dimitris Anamateros
music & vocals: Maria Anamaterou

The homeland is that which is admired from afar
an extinguished oil lamp
the beloved tear
the handkerchief of pain.

Dawn from the Dodecanese [islands],
from the Cyclades a holy vow,
an Armenian complaint,
and crying from Smyrna.

Wherever you love and wherever is the earth
rose is the color of the dawn
even in a faraway place
sweetly the morning star appears

The homeland is the unexpected meeting
Tortures suffered with pain
But also the bride’s joy
when she is in love.

The one returning to the homeland and the emigre
the harvest and the winters
the light and the fruitless line
the thorn and the anemones [flowers].

  1. Alice Mercer says:

I love world music, but am not really familiar with modern Greek artists. I found Maria Anamaterou’s vocals to be beautiful and very accessible. I also appreciate the translations, as Google Translate just doesn’t do the lyrical qualities justice.

  2. kathy browning says:

i loved watching these musicians especially. even though i liked the ones with scenery and flowers too, it is very fascinating to see the instruments and the musicians interacting.

  3. eva says:
