Stamatis Kokotas / Σταμάτης Κόκοτας

The story of the drunk
lyrics: Yiorgos Kanellopoulos
music: Yiorgos Hatzinasios
first performance: Stamatis Kokotas

I heard the story of a drunk
in a harbor, in a faraway country
however I forgot it at the first opportunity
because I didn’t believe it was true

He had told me why men cry
why they get drunk alone every night
why they burn their innards with death
why their tears flow like rain

How great for me was the punishment
when I too loved a young girl
then I remembered this story
then I understood the words of the drunk

He had told me why men cry
why they get drunk alone every night
why they burn their innards with death
why their tears flow like rain

Don’t knock on my door at midnight
lyrics; Nikos Gatsos
music: Demos Moutsis
vocals: Stamatis Kokotas

Don’t knock
on my door at midnight
don’t speak to me
I can’t hear you

If you love me
don’t come back
let me keep
company with pain

Wherever you go
you take love
you bring darkness
and cloudy skies

(translation: Eva Johanos)

You took the big road
lyrics: Nikos Gatsos
music: Demos Moutsis
first performance: Stamatis Kokotas

You took the big road
to go abroad
you left with me
the wound

You took the big road
a road without end
the tear became
a wide sea

Now they are knocking on my door
north winds and winters
but the loving hearts
always stay alone

You took the big road
and the path
How can I close my eyes
How can I sleep

You took the big road
and I remain alone
what can I wait for
what can I watch for

(translation: Eva Johanos)

Say that you met me
Lyrics: Lefteris Papadopoulos
Music: Yiannis Spanos
First version: Stamatis Kokotas

Send me away, then, don’t recoil
Please, don’t feel sorry
It was written for me to love you
It was written for you to reject me.

Say that you met me one night in a dream
Say that you forgot me as the morning came
And don’t think that for me you were not a dream
And don’t care what will happen to me in life.

Let me cover you then,
Tonight it’s freezing
And close the eyes so that I pass
Like a shadow in the black oblivion.

In the years of Otto
Lyrics: Nikos Gatsos
Music: Stavros Xarchakos
First version: Stamatis Kokotas

One noon
in the region of the Acropolis
merciless thieves
made the warm stones
into a hideout

In Monastiraki
Bavarian constables
under the sun’s glare, dance in front of the king
the Syrtaki

To Crete and to Mani
we’re going to send a message
to cities and villages
we’re going to send a message
for policemen to come
to chase away the beasts.

Down at the port
the policemen sing
the guys have come
but their hearts are still
in Mani

On Tuesday came
the guys from Psiloritis
they drink tsikoudia, but their hearts are still
in Crete

To Crete and to Mani
we sent a message
to cities and villages
we sent a message
and the policemen came
and chased away all the beasts.

With what heart can I reject the world
lyrics: Nikos Gatsos
music: Stavros Xarhakos
vocals: Stamatis Kokotas

With what heart can I bid you farewell
With what heart can I sing you a song
in the sky with the dream I will live
in the sky like a star I will disappear

Call out that I might return close to you
Call out that I might remember the earth

With what heart can I leave your eyes behind
With what heart can I reject the world
on a dark bridge I will sit
in a dark stream I will stand

Give me fire that I may extinguish my night
Give me fire that I may find myself in the sunlight

(translation: Eva Johanos)

It is raining and blowing outside
lyrics: Lefteris Papadopoulos
music: Stavros Xarhakos
first performance: Stamatis Kokotas

Since you are talking about breaking up
let’s break up tonight
stretch out your little hand
and cut my life

Go away then and don’t look
at my tear which falls
but take my breath
Outside it is blowing and raining
