| Rigas Feraios of Velestino (1757- June 24, 1798) was a Greek patriot and early martyr, precursor to the Greek war of independence. His Thourios was a poem [and now a song, in more recent times set to music] that has come to symbolize the impetus behind the Greek revolution of 1821 against the Ottoman empire. The 1821 revolution saw the creation of the Greek national state and the emergence of a strong Greek sense of national identity.
The Thourios is inspired by the American and French revolutions and declares that the struggle for human freedom, dignity and justice never ends; we have to carry it on from generation to generation and win again and again what the great people of the past have struggled to achieve for us.
