Iakovos Kampanellis, Greek writer for the theater, journalist

Iakovos Kampanellis (December 2, 1921- March 29, 2011) was a writer for the Greek theater and a journalist. . .
“Personally I believe that nothing happens without a teacher. However, I also believe that nothing happens without foreign help. The problem is in how that foreign help can become accepted without the one being helped remaining forever someone who lives through copies and borrowed items.”

In the article at Homo Universalis (which I hope to translate soon), there is much more.

Here are some more quotes from his book “From Stages and Squares,” published by Kastanioti in 1990:

“I have the weakness to want everyone to understand me.
-I didn’t begin writing for the theater because I heard a secret voice telling me that I was ordered to this mission. Before I set out to become a writer for the theater I wanted to become an actor. I didn’t manage to do that, and this failure forced me to pick up pencil and paper. It was more a form of revenge than anything else . . .
-In the theater, from almost the first moment, you see a group of actors in the creative process where things are being integrated and fulfilled in an almost absolute sense, in such a way that at the moment you sit down to write, you are not writing, the characters themselves dictate what you will write. It is, in other words, as if you would record a theatrical piece. Or as if you sit and take down a performance you are watching.
-For me the most beautiful part of the theater and the most creative, the most utopian I would say, is in the rehearsal phase. And I mean the advanced rehearsals, where truly the miracle of the theater is coming together as a a whole.
-The theater is not an artistic representation of an outer reality, it is mainly a presentation of the inner [reality]. . .
. . .Iakovos Kampanellis also co-wrote the book Mauthausen, in which he told the story of what he lived through in the concentration and extermination camp from 1943 to 1945. . .
[He] wrote down his experiences in the Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen in the book of the same name which was published in 1965. . .and also in four poems which Mimis Despotopoulos asked for him to add, [poems which] Mikis Theodorakis set to music and Maria Farantouri interpreted.”

Song of songs
Lyrics: Iakovos Kampanellis
Music: Mikis Theodorakis

How beautiful she is, my love
in her everyday dress
and the little comb in her hair
Nobody ever knew that she is so beautiful

Girls of Auschwitz
Dachau’s girls
have you seen by chance my love?

We saw her leaving on a long voyage
she was no longer wearing her dress
nor a little comb in her hair

How beautiful she is, my love
the one pampered by her mother
and her brother’s kisses
Nobody ever knew that she is so beautiful

Girls of Auschwitz
Dachau’s girls
have you seen by chance my love?

We saw her in the frigid town square
with a number stamped on her white hand
with a yellow star pinned by her heart

How beautiful she is, my love
the one pampered by her mother
and her brother’s kisses
Nobody ever knew that she is so beautiful

μην είδατε την αγάπη μου;

μην είδατε την αγάπη μου;

‘The “Fairytale without a name,” one of the most beloved works of Iakovos Kampanellis, is based on the story by the same name by Penelope Delta. The story consists of an allegory for Greece, which finds itself bloodied by the various political and social troubles, giving the author the opportunity to approach modern Greek reality and its problems. Thus, in the country’s mobilization for war, [Kampanellis] satirizes how the place is governed and the reaction of the people. His aim is to speak to the falsehood of the era, where beneath the big words, which speak of high ideals, hides the decadence of every era.’

I throw my heart into the well
lyrics: Iakovos Kampanellis
music: Manos Hatzidakis
vocals: Lakis Pappas

I throw my heart into the well
that it may become water to quench your thirst

I sow my heart in the valley
so it may become bread for you to eat your fill

Into the fire I throw my heart
bring your little hands to warm them

Into the wind I throw my heart
that it may become cool freshness for you to breathe

Hector and Andromache
lyrics: Iakovos Kampanellis
music: Manos Hatzidakis
vocals: Lakis Pappas

From the castle of Troy, Andromache calls,
to Hector who is setting off for battle,
with bitterness:

“My soldier, the battle will be won
by he who longs greatly to live.
Whoever goes to battle to die,
my soldier, is not made for war.

Thus the daughter of Gabriel
as I was leaving on the 20th of April
called to me from high on the balcony:

“Soldier if you want to win the battle,
make sure to love a girl.
Whoever does not make an oath to return,
my soldier, loses the war.”

Dear mama
lyrics: Iakovos Kampanellis
music: Manos Hatzidakis
vocals” Haris Αλεξίου

Ach, what shame, this shame
my dear mama, and how will it be removed
as much as the river flows
my dear mama, it will not wash it away

What can two teardrops do to me,
and forty-two sighs, my dear mama
and what if my tear is fresh
the mouth dumb and bitter, my dear mama

And I run to find someone
to ask me, for me to ask him
what will happen, what will happen
who will hurt, who will hurt
my dear mama, my dear mama
