The song accompanies a slow men’s dance “in three,” wherein the steps alternate with ritual movements of pantomime as a group. This recording is an excerpt of the concert “Carnival with Dora Stratou,” which took place at the Thessaloniki Music Hall in 2003. Domna Samiou accompanies the chorus of the Domna Samiou Artistic Association of Traditional Music.” “And for a more complete explanation, the subject of the song has its roots in the Byzantine years when in the monasteries the monks bought pepper in kernels, ground it and sold it as spice in powder form. The pounding/grinding of the pepper was a very tedious process and it was done by the monks who were being punished.” |
