Seaside clouds
Lyrics: Kostas Spiliotakos
Music & vocals: Yiannis Haroulis

Take the sadness from my eyes
and cast it in the deeps of the sea
and if by any chance I get lost in the winds
don’t refuse me, don’t put me down

Give me your most precious caress
and if yearning pillages your body
let this be the cause, the excuse and the catalyst
for you to never refuse me, never betray me

I’m going to rig seaside clouds
I’ll be by your side even if it makes me bleed
I’m going to rig seaside clouds
I’ll be by your side even if it makes me bleed
I’ll be by your side…

Feel my deepest breath
like a scent brought by the rain
and if the dream becomes a journey and a wish
don’t regret having loved a lot

Everyone tells me what are you crying for
(The troubles)
S. Foustalieris

I am glad for my troubles
I celebrate my bitternesses
and if they talk to me about joys
I am not acquainted with them

I am glad for my troubles
I celebrate my bitternesses

Everyone tells me what are you crying for
And if I cry, whom am I bothering?
In this world I was born
to try out hearts.

Dear mama
lyrics: Iakovos Kampanellis
music: Manos Hatzidakis

Ach, what shame, this shame
my dear mama, and how will it be removed
as much as the river flows
my dear mama, it will not wash it away

What can two teardrops do to me,
and forty-two sighs, my dear mama
and what if my tear is fresh
the mouth dumb and bitter, my dear mama

And I run to find someone
to ask me, for me to ask him
what will happen, what will happen
who will hurt, who will hurt
my dear mama, my dear mama

(translation: Eva Johanos)

It was not an island
lyrics: Nikos Kazantzakis
music: Manos Hatzidakis

It was not an island
it was a beast lying in the sea
It was the mermaid
the sister of Alexander the Great
who grieved
and caused tempests in the sea

When Crete is set free
it will be set free as well, my own heart
When Crete is set free
I will laugh

(translation: Eva Johanos)

Hades
lyrics & music: Vangelis Kazantzis
vocals: Yiannis Haroulis

You fly and you dream
but on the road you fall asleep, hidden
you let yourself be a pawn
in the wind, timidly on the chessboard.

You thirst; you look around for water
when you find it, you dive into its sources
you carry a flask of fears
you fill it, and when you drink of it you get drunk.

Look, the walking people of the earth are moving
they are sending you secret messages.

Longed-for light which burns the iris of the eyes
how it resembles the dark places of Hades.

(translation: Eva Johanos)

Winterflower
Lyrics: Eleni Fotaki
Music: Yiorgos Kazantzis
first performance: Yiannis Haroulis

Autumn rises tonight in love
the mountains smelled of rosemary and honey
and I look silently at the wet ground
beauty hurts like live coals.

I ask the sky for a kiss and the sky gives me dust
but when I want you to get cut by the heart’s spindle
the doors stir and the lock turns
the wind whistles at me, if you are going to come don’t be late.

Take off your clothes and from my eyes take water and wash yourself
separation, remember, is a winterflower.
I inhabited sorrow day and night
I leave you in the wind to find you in the light.

Love, fears and dreams have supper before it breaks
at pain’s country church solitude becomes a saint
and me, I ask a sorrow to scar me
before the light has set, I ‘ll deny you again

Take off your clothes and from my eyes take water and wash yourself
separation, remember, is a winterflower.
I inhabited sorrow day and night
I leave you in the wind to find you in the light.

Hidden Love
lyrics: traditional
music: Ludovikos of Anoyeion
performed by Yiannis Haroulis

There is no pain which hurts
pain which poisons
like hidden love
which does not show itself.
For you I cry, I feel pain
and I secretly sigh
but such pain, for joys
in the thousands, I would not exchange it

(translation: Eva Johanos)

Hamlet of the moon
lyrics: Manos Eleftheriou
music: Thanos Mikroutsikos

You fooled the heavens with enchantments, black flame
That life is given without overthrowing
And all the words of the mad which were our own words
You put magic on them, with poison, in the prodigal silence

You mourned with your lovers naked and drunk
Because you had scores to settle with the immortals
The arias of an opera you lisped, beaten
A provincial student before two oracles

What were you envious of, what did you want with them, the glorious Parises of the world
Any way about it the world everywhere is a tekes [club] anymore
You laid claim to the miracles that hashish gives
and the hallucinations of those that live imprisoned

And one evening when you dressed as Hamlet of the moon
You extinguished with one breath the stage lights
And you began monologues and solved enigmas
Of an art and an epoch old and dark

(translation: Eva Johanos)

Once around the moon
lyrics & music: Danae Panayiotopoulou

One round the moon and another round the life
you stand naked in front of me, the time cracks
I turn my fire into a caress and I hide your wound
that, since I have remembered, locks my body

Two rounds the moon, my body asks for you
sharp knives come out of my fingers
don’t be afraid, those are for me, I will burn myself in my own fire
I don’t ask you to be mine, just to see you

Ten years, ten centuries, they look to find me solutions
you don’t know me, but you know that hands don’t forget
some bloody nights that casually pass by
that the bodies are thirsty but the eyes look somewhere else

I’m going to ask you three times if there has been a time
that you were lonely in the dark and I was your comfort
I’m going to ask you three times how to stop the time
when you come in the nights and you look me in the eyes

At daybreaks I forget myself
words & music: Thanassis Papakonstantinou
vocals: Yiannis Haroulis

I have no mask to wear to this carnival
only a net to gather the sea’s craftiness
and silence’s wealth

(twice)
Strike well, strike hard, a sugared shot of the rifle
and let the gallery feel the violence of the battle of confetti

Trash, the thought, I discard it, logic I renounce
with a secret and prolonged remorse for roads I did not attempt
at daybreaks I forget myself

Hold onto the mind, hold onto the mind to keep it from griping about the weather
it which made a clique with pain and is stingy towards sweetness

(translation: Eva Johanos)

First Spring
lyrics & music: Thanassis Papakonstantinou
vocals: Yiannis Haroulis

Have the skin of the sea
and the caress of the blind man;
Thus it is possible that they may desire you
and perhaps tell it to you.

Otherwise, the first spring,
at the first crossroads,
the loves will be scattered
and you will remain all alone.

Have the breath of the night
and the tear of the dawn.
Thus it is possible that they may want you
and perhaps tell it to you.

Otherwise, the first spring,
on an electricity line
like the birds they will stand
your empty moments.

Have the lips of the abyss
and the glance of the fire.
Thus it is possible that they may love you
and perhaps tell it to you.

Otherwise, the first spring,
at the first flower-bearing
The heartaches will come back
in order for you to have company.

The tail of the horse
lyrics & music: Thanassis Papakonstantinou
vocals: Yiannis Haroulis

The rider had the horse in his heart.
Where could he find a better friend to confide his secrets.
He fed him wild barley, four-leafed clover;
he had decorations on his saddle of shining shell.
He was white, bright white, he was fast and smart,
he galloped on the naked mountain and avoided the shadow.
But one ill-fated day, beneath a fig tree,
he came across a snake which gave its bite.
Five minutes didn’t pass, but centuries passed
the rider sang his death laments and caressed its flanks.
“My companion, confide in me; where are you going, as you are leaving?
Let’s make a vow. In time I will find you or you will find me.”
He returns, bent over, to his house, and opens the door, bent over,
He nails shut the windows and throws himself into drink.
In the meantime, the birds wrapped the horse’s
skeleton, leaving only the tail.
A craftsman passed by, who had learned in Kremona
to make fiddles, violins which would last for years.
He saw the hair of the tail, white and silky,
he took it and made bows of it, one by one.
It took the young man two months to open the window
On the first day of the Third month he goes out to the fair.
There were lute-players who wanted to be asked to play,
and a violin player who turned heads.
“Health and joy to the fiddler. I will give you lots of money.
I want to hear the good stuff, maybe I will feel lighter.”
Ten times he passed resin over the bow,
he fit it to his chin, his instrument, with pride,
and as he began to bow, up and down,
he turned the world upside down, put the earth on a plate.
He throws handfuls of money, the man, and dances
he hears whinnying and his mind leaves.

«Σύντροφε που ξανοίγεσαι, που χάνεσαι και φεύγεις;

Washerwoman of the sky
song by Thanassis Papakonstantinou
performance by Yiannis Haroulis

Lethe’s Well (The Well of Forgetting)
words & music: Miltiades Paschalidis
vocals: Yiannis Haroulis

The blossom of the wild poppy
Don’t breathe in its fragrance
Because to me my darling
One day you will return

You will seek from me the fire
And the caress of the madman
You always looked for the kisses
That leave a mark

My caresses I threw away
Into the well of forgetting
So they will not find them the embraces
That go out walking in the evening

With migrating birds
Don’t reach for love
Because they are fleeting
And soon you lose them

And they pillage you of speech
And you have no more breath
And you keep coming back to me in the morning
Looking for a caress from me

My caresses I threw away
Into the well of forgetting
So they will not find them the embraces
That go out walking in the evening

(translation: Eva Johanos)

Little rose

The warrior’s dream
words & music: Dimitris Yfantis
vocals: Yiannis Haroulis

On the hump of the dragon
on the wing of his back
in the savage castles I battle
and thus I count my years

I make a black quiver
from the hair of the night
on the salt of the earth I write
and I sing with the dogs

I fill my cup
I offer a drink to the snake so it will come out
that standing erect in the sun I may listen
for the cry of the eagle in the sky

On a high mountain
lyrics & music: traditional from Crete
vocals: Yiannis Haroulis

On a high mountain,
on a boulder rooted in the earth,
sits an eagle.

Wet, covered in snow
the poor thing is pleading.
And he is pleading
for the sun to come up.

Sun, come up- sun, come up.

Sun, shine and give
so that it melts
the snow from my wings
and the ice crystals from my talons.

Sun, come up- sun, come up.
