‘Good music must be shared so those who for various reasons were not fortunate enough to hear it from close by may also commune. And I am speaking of the “Liturgy,” the Rebetika which Manos Hatzidakis presented decades ago after he had prepared the soil with his famous lecture (1949) and had foreseen that “Some day the noise around these [musicians, Rebetes] will die down, and they will continue, unmolested on their way. Who knows what new life the “nonchalant 9/8″ holds in store for us in the future. However, we will by then have finally understood their power once and for all. And we will see them very naturally and correctly raising their voice in our immediate surroundings and living, sometimes in order to interpret us, and sometimes to make us conscious of our deeper selves.” I think that, for my part, I have prepared you to hear the second part of the Liturgy, with the exceptional Sofia Avramidou, the young Flery Ntantonaki and the pianist Sakis Kontonikolas, who followed faithfully the playing [style] of Hatzidakis.’ – Christos Zouliatis |

‘[In the]“Epitaph”. . . we have the cooperation of three giants of Art, Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hatzidakis and Yiannis Ritsos. . . The first wrote the music, the second wrote the orchestration and the third wrote the poetry. But let’s take things from the beginning: In 1936, Yiannis Ritsos, seeing the photograph of the murdered Tasos Tousis and over his dead body, his mother crying and singing a dirge, [Ritsos] wrote in one night his own lament, the “Epitaph.” Later, in 1959, M. Theodorakis appeared from Paris determined to involve himself with popular music and its political and social meaning. He set the “Epitaph” to music, and decided to publish the work with 8 poems set to music, and the local [Greek] recording companies referred him to Manos Hatzidakis to follow up… We arrive to today and Sakis Kontonikolas undertakes to play the Epitaph as it was arranged by Hatzidakis for piano and voice in 1970, choosing Sofia Avramidou as a young Flery Ntantonaki. It is the exact piano sheet music which [Hatzidakis] drew up and presented in concerts with Flery. [From a concert] at the “Aition” on the 16th of June [2014] . . . the 7 songs of the Epitaph (missing is “You stood at the window”).’- Christos Zouliatis |
