The dream
poetry: Dionysios Solomos
music & vocals: Katerina Fotinaki

Listen to a dream, my soul,
And the goddess of beauty;
It seemed to me that I was
With you one night.
In a fine garden
We walked together,
All shining were the stars,
And you were looking at them.
I, a humble man- Say, stars,
If there are any of you
Shining up there
Like the eyes of this lady?
Tell if you have ever seen
On another woman, such beautiful hair,
Such a hand, such a foot,
Such an angelic look?
Such a beautiful body that whosoever
Looks at her directly asks-
If that is an angel,
how does it not have wings?
Each kiss, my soul,
Which you sweetly gave me
Caused another rose to spring up
From the rosebush.
All night they burst into bloom,
Until the dawn came shining,
Which found us, both
With our pale look.
This is the dream, my soul;
Now it rests with you,
To make it come true,
And to remember it for me.

Σὰν τὰ μάτια τῆς κυρᾶς;
Τέτοια ἀγγελικὴ θωριά;
πῶς δὲν ἔχει καὶ φτερά;

The birds of unhappiness
Lyrics & music: Dionysis Savvopoulos
vocals: Katerina Fotinaki
with Orestes Kalampalikis on guitar

I know some birds, black birds
bitter birds, birds of woe
they live in regions of misfortune
where sickness rules
sickness terror ashes

And when evening falls in the city
and the unceasing lashing, lashing rain begins
the birds arrive in the city
on the roofs, at the windows
and they steal people’s dreams

However the evening ends
the birds scream and cry
they return into exile

And the rain – good granny! -
drizzles into their heart
fragments of fairytales
However many birds you give me
me, I’m going to leave again;
because I love some birds
black birds, bitter birds
birds of woe

Sun of justice
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
Lyrics: Odysseas Elytis
Performer: Katerina Fotinaki
guitar adaptation: Orestes Kalampalikis

Sun of justice perceivable
and you, myrtle glorifying,
don’t, I beg you, don’t
forget my country!

It has eagle-shaped mountains,
lines of vines on volcanoes,
and the houses are more white
in the neighborship of azure!

My bitter hands with the thunder
I turn them behind the time,
I call my old friends
with threats and blood!

Lullaby
lyrics: Nikos Gatsos
music: Manos Hatzidakis
performed by Katerina Fotinaki & Angelique Ionatos

Sleep, my child, sleep, you who did not want water,
our big horse. Ach my little heart, who knows
what it says, the little stream in the green pasture.

Sleep, the black water in the green grasses
which the tall song catches. Sleep, my rosebush
where the earth with tears waters, our good horse.

It has wounded feet, a collar encrusted with ice,
it has a silver lasso nailed in its eyes.
Only one time when it saw the brave mountains
it whinnied and disappeared into the dark waters.

Ach where did you go, my horse, you who did not want to drink
ach, pining in the snow. Sleep, my carnation flower
where the earth with tears waters, our good horse.

Don’t come, don’t leave,* the window, shut it
with the foliage of dreams, with dream foliage.
She is sleeping, my little child, she has become silent, my baby.

Ach where did you go, my horse, you who did not want to drink
horse of the dawn.
