Night lies down
in the wild mountains
and old man Matthew
smokes, hunched over
He looks laughing
over his little life
and he stretches out quietly
near the fire.
With a fine head of hair
and a long beard
old man Matthew
looks like a real saint.
High in the mountains
it has been many years now
that he lives alone
just he and God.
As soon as the sun comes up
he wakes up in the morning
he prays simply
and goes out to work.
Somewhere far out there

and he with energy
works the earth.

Ξαπλώνει η νυχτιά
μες στ’ άγρια βουνά
κι ο γέρο-Μαθιός
καπνίζει σκυφτός.
Κοιτάει γελαστός
το λίγο του βιος
κι αράζει απαλά
σιμά στη φωτιά.
Με πλούσια μαλλιά
και γένια μακριά
ο γέρο-Μαθιός
μοιάζει άγιος σωστός.
Ψηλά στα βουνά
παν χρόνια πολλά
που ζει μοναχός
αυτός κι ο Θεός.
Σαν ο ήλιος θα βγει
ξυπνάει το πρωί
προσεύχεται απλά
και πάει για δουλειά.
Κάπου έξω μακριά
η φύση γελά
κι αυτός με ορμή
οργώνει τη γη.
Με πλούσια μαλλιά

ο γέρο-Μαθιός
ναι μοιάζει άγιος σωστός.
