Vasso Katraki

Vasso Katraki (Aitoliko, July 5, 1914 – Athens, December 27, 1988) was a Greek painter and especially a distinguished printmaker.

She studied at the National School of Fine Arts under Konstantine Parthenis and Yiannis Kefallinos. She started out with painting, but her inclination towards printmaking soon manifested itself.

Her family background from Nisaki (“Little island”) in Aitoliko marked both her life and her work. The imagery of her work principally depicts the sea lake, the fishermen with their boats, the special bridges of Aitoliko as well as provincial scenes, laborers, and simple women; it also features scenes from the Occupation [of the Axis powers during WWII], the Civil War [1946-1949], and later the dictatorship [1967-1974]. As a result of her political exhibitions, she was exiled both during the Civil War as well as during the period of the dictatorship. She was a resident of Piraeus from 1947- 1955. She had many individual exhibitions and took part in group exhibitions of Greek artists in other countries. Her woodblock prints were considered to be of outstanding quality.

On June 25, 2006 the Vasso Katraki Museum and Printmaking Center was opened in Nisaki of Aitoliko. The artist left all of her work to her descendants, and the artwork is housed permanently in one of the museum’s galleries. The second large space of the museum is available to exhibit the works of other distinguished fine artists. The basement of the museum has been designed to be used as a school for printmaking one day. [borrowed from Wikipedia, translated by Eva Johanos]
