Ilias Simopoulos / Ηλίας Σιμόπουλος

Ilias Simopoulos, modern Greek poet

The Wounded Earth

We
Built all the houses
of the world. Yet
we have no house.

We
Sowed all the fields
of the earth. Yet
we have no bread.

We
have been killed in all the wars
Yet we have no homeland
Where we go
The wounded earth sighs
Beneath our heavy soles

But we are the earth
from the moment we exist
We
with knives disemboweling
one another
We covered the sky with clouds
We scattered rivers of our tears.

της γης.

The mother’s lament
poetry: Ilias Simopoulos
music: Yiannis Spanos, Iosif Benakis
vocals: Arletta

All day long, while you were away, our house was a ruin.
And yet how lovely it was when you would come back in the evening
And never mind that we ate dry bread, never mind if there was no oil.

And even if there was no charcoal it was enough for you to be near me.
Ach, how at each knock on the door my heart
was breaking, my boy, and my speech deserted me.

Do you remember the roses in the front, in the orchard
How they bloomed in the spring, and afterwards on each holiday
We filled up our arms, with roses, our whole embrace.

And your old father felt pride, seeing you, and with him
I did as well, poor wretch; and if I cried what a miracle!
My heart became lighter from crying.

You grew. You did not listen. You left for the whole day.
And when in the evenings you told me “Freedom mother
will come” they touched my heart these words like a threat.

But if you left from me in the early morning, before the break of dawn, alone
And my hours passed slowly, each moment a year
I knew that you would come back and the pain was sweet.

Now on our hearthstone curled up in a ball I languish
Like an olive burned by lightning and I no longer seek you
What that it is a high hill and I can’t go up. . .

Why didn’t you listen, my beloved son, to the mother who gave you birth?
And if it comes now, Freedom, now that everything is in ruins,
What will I do with it, my sweet boy, without you?

Γιατί δεν άκουες, γιόκα μου, τη μάνα που σ’ εγέννα;
Τι να την κάνω, αγόρι μου γλυκό, χωρίς εσένα;
