Maria Zoe / Μαρία Ζωή

When a spring
Lyrics: Manolis Anagnostakis
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
vocals: Maria Zoe

When a spring smiles
you will wear new clothes
and you’ll come to shake my hands
my old friend

And perhaps no-one will be expecting you back
but I feel the beatings of your heart
and a flower grown on your aged, bitter memory

Some train, at night, whistling,
or a ship, from far away and unexpected
will bring you together with our youth
and our dreams

And perhaps you really forgot nothing
but the return is always worth more
than any of my loves or yours
my old friend

The smiling lad
Lyrics: Brendan Behan, translated by Vasilis Rotas
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
Vocals: Maria Zoe

It was the 18th of November
Just there, before Makrun
Troops in khaki arrived
With transports

The lads were expecting them
The lads of the people’s army
And with their hand grenades
They made fools of them . . .

It was a morning in August, nearly red dawn
I went out to get some air in the blossoming earth
I see a girl crying, mourning with a heart-rending cry
Break my heart the smiling lad is lost

He had bravery and courage and for ever I’ll mourn
the bouncing step, the sweet laughter
damned be the hour, cursed be the moment
our enemies [the fascists] killed the smiling lad

If only he had been killed by the leader’s side
and if only he was taken by an Englishman’s shot
or a hunger strike in prison
I would be proud to have lost the smiling lad

My kingly love, with love I tell you
for what you did I will mourn for ever
because you would finish off all our enemies
glory and honor to the never-forgotten smiling lad
