The blessing of the mother

storytelling song from Crete
[Narration]: A lithe young fair-haired girl was walking, and in her snow white hands she lifted an earthenware jug
to go to the ancient fountain to fill it..
On the road she met an old woman, a witch, a reader of fortunes
and as soon as she saw the lithesome girl she begged of her,
“Daughter don’t go near the water, as every thousand years on this day
from the earth there comes a great beast, and he takes the form of a man
with the shining of the morning star, in order for the crafty one to seduce a young girl like you
and to take her at daybreak deep into the bowels of the earth.”..
but the girl with a smile followed the old woman but for a few steps and then, fearlessly continued on her way as before…
and when she approached the water and went to fill her jug,
she saw a dashing young man who shone like the sun,
that wicked monster from Hades,
and he had the form of an angel, in order to seduce young women,
and the girl was smitten, and straightway professed:
[girl singing]: Stranger, I never expected to see beauty like yours;
take me, I say, as your slave, to live in service to you…
I curse that witch and the lies she tells,
you are no son of a dragon, only the sun that burns
the hearts of girls sweetly and wounds them
with a wound that never heals, as many years as may pass…
[Narration]: …and the monster laughed at her, and went to approach her,
but suddenly he was filled with fear and drew back:
[monster]: What are you wearing, girl, that repels me and I can’t taste your virtues as I wish…
[girl singing]: I didn’t adorn myself much; I don’t wear gold jewelry; only clear to the All Holy, I cross myself…
And before I left, my mother, after her kiss
she shed a tear and gave me her poor blessing.
