Chainides / Χαΐνηδες

The name of this group, “Chainides,” comes from the Cretan tradition of untamed rebels, freedom fighters who live hidden in the mountains.

Look, everyone at the acrobat

Look, everyone, at the acrobat
how he bounces
look, everyone at the stranger
how he is not made dizzy

Look at the acrobat who laughs when he falls
and he never cries, he never cries

Look how the desert bird has
blood on its wing
it flies, even if the shot of death may find it
against the weather

Against the weather it has honor as it flies
stay alone, stay alone

Look everyone, look at me also,
I ask for nothing more
how I have broken wings on my shoulders
and I perform as an acrobat

The day turned over and still you have not appeared
Don’t cry, my bird, don’t cry, my bird

Athivoles*
lyrics & music: Dimitris Apostolakis
Chainides

The day comes, the sun leaves
like frightened birds
my dreams leave again
from the cells of thought
my dreams go out again
like trembling candles

Unfortunate wave, ach how it beats you
the nick in the shoreline
partridge**, as long as you were away in foreign lands
they destroyed your nest
old man, in a little tavern
you sip the old times

the sad little tree of autumn
in the deserted gaze of the mountain
hurricane in the journey
of the great return
athivoles in the night
disturb my mind

(*athivoles- my best guess is that this is a variation of amfivolies- doubts
**partridge- an expression used to describe a beautiful young girl

Banner
words and music: Dimitris Apostolakis
first performance: Chainides

A ship the dream
which always takes us on a journey
with the weather counter the current

Banner, banner
black and red, my friends
Banner black and red
in the mind and in the heart

I have a love which hurts
don’t cry my sweet love
and be patient

From the window a look
and from the door farewell
the fine weather for sailing will pass
and we will come out on dry land

What each one seeks he shall find
and there exist on the seashore
hidden treasures

Banner black and red
the will of the wind
on my sword I will carve
how I loved you much

Let’s go to unknown shores
in company with drifters
saints and madmen

Banner black and red
my betrayed generation
as if the breaths will join together
the sails will swell with air

Chainis

Like the lone tree on the mountain top,
I like tο be alone,
I dοn’t go with the many…

Little Hope
lyrics & music: Dimitris Apostolakis
performed by Chainides

Little Hope who came from the foreign lands
laughed and said to me “I love you”
but I didn’t find the words, the right words
to sing a song for her

Tsiki tsiki tzela, tsiki tsiki bom
Little Hope left for the foreign lands
she set out to go to the north
ach, Hope, wait for me, too
that I may give you my wishes your good health

Tsiki tsiki tzela, tsiki tsiki bom

Dry the earth in my heart
and Hope rain water
I sing and cry in my loneliness
to trick the weather

Tsiki tsiki tzela, tsiki tsiki bom

When you return again, rock dove
don’t look in vain to see me
maybe I will have melted, like the first snow
but in a song you will find me

Tsiki tsiki tzela, tsiki tsiki bom

Love Song
traditional words, music by Chainides

When you don’t remember the old times,
only this remember
that I awoke in your embrace
and you told me to go back to sleep.

Out of all of life’s cheapness
I recall with bitterness (poison)
the reflected sunlight of the evening
on a lithe naked body.

Live only for one dawn
that is enough life for you
a rose which blooms for a long time
loses its fragrance

vocals: Michalis Stavrakakis
words: traditional except for the second verse (Dimitris Apostolakis)
music: traditional, arranged by Michalis Stavrakakis

1993: Distribution of Chainides’ second album ‘Kosmos,’ and it is one dream, with the participation of Ross Daly and Socrates Sinopoulos.

The musical group Chainides is made up of an open whole, discovering musical roads from Crete to Asia Minor and from the Middle East back again to the Balkans. Following musical paths, Chainides dares and creates new kinds of music and lyrics, which represent fully the plethora of life’s yearnings, the sense of the beautiful and the lost. Eros and Death, the supreme powers, are imprinted in measure and define ‘everything you have seen and desired and all that you have never seen.’
On the first hearing, the reason becomes an image and imposes itself in a revolutionary sense on the technocrat “audience.” The songs of Chainides pour forth a sense of daring, they are bold, in a time in which truth is marginalized. In their lyrics the listener will find his truth and maybe this truth is what makes the group endure, which is completing its 19th year of performing.

Recipes of cooking magic
Chainides

From a young age she enjoyed, alone in the kitchen,
passing hours
with cooking,
and her tears fell as she remembered her life
and they gave to her food
a magical taste.

Cumin, nutmeg and cayenne,
she never had a companion
with whom to exchange a blessing,
lower the fire after the first boil,
so that the creation may happen
again from the beginning.

Finely chopped parsley, and a clove of garlic,
that a hope might shine
in the honey-colored eyes,
and toward the end add a cup of oil,
that one might feel a caress
one day on the hair.

One night her kitchen caught fire,
which made her secret escape place
look like a celebration,
in such a way that all around white lilies of marriage grew,
just like those
she had dreamed of.

How many hearts which lit up and dimmed,
made us great
in some small moment,
and soundlessly passed from the edge of life,
without leaving a tear
in a line on a cheek

(translation: Eva Johanos)

The saloon
lyrics & music: Dimitris Apostolakis
first performance: Chainides

Oh, it was beautiful I guess,
in the old times
my saloon
seashore, heart-ache and spirits
tucked away in my heart
with my dream.

And every day when evening came
sitting by the cask the bard
with his lute
with the wine in his being
in his yearning love song
embroidering that world there.

And Stavros over there in the corner
who for two dark cherry lips
quietly drinks
he takes water as he sings
while the lute of the bard
extinguishes the pain.

And Miris begins to dance
only the ground has an enemy
golden palaces
in some wide sea
he remembers, red fires
his two eyes.

I remember every dawn
when I wished the sun would not rise
in your embrace
dreams, boats with sails
strolling through creation
with your kisses.

Slow my heaviness, and heavy
maybe it was not real
your love for me
I ask passersby in the narrow streets
if they have seen chestnut-colored eyes
like yours.

How can I justify a life
and a star in the morning
which trembles as it goes out
in the saloon which has fallen into ruin
an old dream of mine
has remained.

The stranger
music: Dimitris Apostolakis & Christos Konstantinou
lyrics: Dimitris Apostolakis
vocals: Maria Koti

The world all around, a prison
open the iron door for a moment
and they will christen you, the sighs
oil and perfume.

Loneliness, heavy lead
bring to the saucer the silver water
that I may make a magic spell for the weather
to not afflict you.

You are a foreigner like the others
but your homeland is in the hearts of foreigners
you say that the evenings grew longer
winter again.

Pale leaves, sad villages
wet roads, shining cities
pass before you many times
without you.

Dawn falls like a tear
and like a girl with her hair unbraided
and you wrestle with the old
to find an end.

The sea its fury
sometimes takes back and becomes calm
and to you this moment seems
like death.

You run to enter the crowd of people
to forget yourself in the noise
because deep within you even the gods
have died.

Tear pale as the first rain
the day before yesterday they asked you, in the street, two children
if you had love in your heart
and you said no.

The Tiger
Chainides

I have a tiger inside me, wild
ravenous
which is always waiting for me
and I am always on the lookout for;
I hate her and she hates me, she wants to
kill me,
but I hope in time
she makes friends with me.

She has her teeth in the heart, her claws in
my brain
and I for my own good
fight for her
and all the good things of the world it makes me hate,
so that I may sing to her the heaviest
heartache.

Μountains, valleys and cliffs she pushes me
to cross,
that I may embrace her
in the craziest dance,
and when on cold evenings she remembers
her cages,
she gives me her pelt
for me to wear.

Some times from drink we fall
drunk,
almost loving each other,
each one of us to sleep
and it resembles, this silence, with just before
the storm, like the last hour
before she will attack.

(translation: Eva Johanos)

Eros and Death
lyrics: Mitsοs Stavrakakis
music: Michalis Stavrakakis
performed by Chainides

Eros and Death
hold the same swords
and both in a sudden manner
and underhandedly they strike

When I kiss your lips
my body becomes numb
and in the shore of the dream
I lose myself, my jasmine flower
