Down on the daisy’s
little threshing-floor, they held a crazy dance,
the children of the bee.

The sun sweats, the
water trembles. Tall spears of wheat
bend the dark-skinned sky.

Over in the golden sorghum
tomboys are sleeping.
Their sleep smells like a forest fire.
In their teeth
the sun thrashes.

Down on the daisy’s
little threshing-floor.

Κάτω στης μαργαρίτας τ’ αλωνάκι

Κάτω στης μαργαρίτας
τ’ αλωνάκι, στήσαν χορό
τρελό τα μελισσόπουλα.

Ιδρώνει ο ήλιος, τρέμει το
νερό. Στάχυα ψηλά λυγίζουνε
το μελαμψό ουρανό.

Πέρα μέσα στα χρυσά νταριά
κοιμούνται αγοροκόριτσα.
Ο ύπνος τους μυρίζει πυρκαγιά.
Στα δόντια τους
ο ήλιος σπαρταράει.

Κάτω στης μαργαρίτας
τ’ αλωνάκι.
