Grandma’s fairytales
lyrics & music: Dimitris Apostolakis
Chainides

Once upon a time, my son
a good king ruled a faraway land…

I still remember grandma
getting ready to begin telling some story
and to different kinds of times
her mind would sail

that she would tell, in such a wonderful way
of this and that,
of magical spells, and love affairs,
and terrible crimes;

Of kings and good young men
who conquered castles,
and witches and beasts
defeated and killed.

And when sweet sleep
overtook my mind,
to the world of fairytales
my thoughts would turn.

Evil time erased
together with my joy
those stories of grandma’s
from my dreams.

And they come from the old time
my God, that it be true
hours of blowing wind
those fairytales

Don’t cry, little one, and you open
wounds in my chest
The two of us will make
the world a fairytale.

I sell couplets
lyrics & music, vocals: Dimitris Apostolakis
(from the album “World and dream are one”- 1993)

A school outfit
white bench
daybreak
and the world a thousand colors.

I sell couplets
with sugar on the outside
take, people, many
good couplets
they cause no harm
two ten-cent pieces each.

For an old love
which the stars took
I filled with heartache
and sighs the nights.

I have a wonderful wasting illness
with memories and a cough
who can find a flaw
in my illness
take, people, many
good couplets.

The dream of a dawn
with youth adored
don’t think of it
my little one and you become bitter.

If we had an expensive
fairytale of the nights
the hearts would be
wide as the threshing floors
take, people, many
good couplets.

The sun is returning and I
am leaving alone again
they are awaiting my
return, faraway places.

With a dim moon
and a mute midnight
Illegitimate ways will bring me
in a deep breath
to give you many
couplets to say.

Little love story
lyrics & music: Dimitris Apostolakis
Chainides

Beautiful young girl
but bitter life
in the beds of many
she was in other words
a laughing child
with sad eyes.

The night they came together
the heavens opened
and stars fell like rain
and the soul left
with the swallows
which migrate for years
at such a time of year.

I love you
and what you have loved
I will love.

Young boy in the village
he took the get-away
and arrived in the city
sharp eye
the sly path
he took, everyone said.

And one afternoon
they stood in wait for him
in God’s desert
with no voice
when from the hand
it went, the knife
straight into the heart.

I love you
and what you have loved
I will love.

My brown eyes
clouds birds
and dreams pass
my eyes [my darling] don’t cry
inside you say
loves live.

Inside my wound
my heaven and earth
secret and uncertain breaths
faraway goddesses
threw into the lake
in my deep memory
the lives of others.

I love you
and what you have loved
I will love.

The old tune
lyrics & music: Dimitris Apostolakis
first performance: Chainides

From the black clouds fall drops of rain
and wound the dark window of the soul.
On the wall of the heart runs the water
and unburies, from the whitewash, the old time

That was a black evening like this one
when someone left to go to another faraway place
And it comes into my memory how we shed tears
as we started to sing the old song

The months go by, the years go by, and we grew old
without dreams how did we pass our youth?
It doesn’t bother me that we went into the darkness
as much as that we didn’t enjoy the light of day

In the shuttered windows the old song
came again tonight, as it first did, for me to sing again.
Blow wind, take her the sweet tune
and whisper to her how I still love her

δίχως όνειρα τη νιότη πως περάσαμε;

Seven rivers
lyrics & music: Dimitris Apostolakis
first performance: Yiannis Haroulis

Seven rivers came together and three sorrows,
and they said that they would calm down for a moment.
The seas subsided and the sighs,
nine swords were drawn on the line.

Spring, the debaucher, in order to pass
look, my fellow villagers, at what will happen.
When we incarnate the passions of the Rabbi,
he the pioneer, and we crooked.

My sun, commander, traveler,
you who have given the joy of the tamer,
man casts about to taste,
from my hot blood to be healed.

The holy week, blonde daughter,
anointed our village, and blooms as a rose,
which eats its god to disappear,
and maybe with his disappearance to be resurrected.

At the summit of springtime, the envied,
thousand-colored Jordan, serpentine,
the poison is medicine for the eagle
that he may fly, as it is written.

Cross the river, passerby,
take me with you in your migration,
and there at the waterfall and at the cliff,
I will learn the redemption of the universe.
